In a significant move to bolster social welfare, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu launched the NTR Bharosa pension scheme on July 1, 2024. This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its vulnerable populations, including senior citizens, widows, disabled individuals, and various marginalized communities. The inauguration of the NTR Bharosa pension scheme took place in Penumaka village, situated in the Mangalagiri Assembly segment of the Guntur District. Chief Minister Naidu, accompanied by Nara Lokesh, General Secretary of the Telugu Desam Party and Minister in the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, personally distributed pensions to beneficiaries. One notable instance was the disbursement to Islavath Sai and her parents, Banavath Pamulyanayak and Banavath Sita, who are all daily-wage earners. This gesture highlighted the government’s dedication to reaching out to the grassroots and ensuring that aid was delivered directly to those in need.
Under the NTR Bharosa scheme, the state government increased the monthly pension amount from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 for categories such as senior citizens, widows, transgender persons, weavers, dappu artists, toddy tappers, cobblers, and fisherfolk. For individuals with disabilities, the pension was elevated to Rs 6,000 per month, and those with chronic illnesses like chronic kidney disease and thalassemia now receive Rs 10,000 monthly. This substantial enhancement reflects the administration’s resolve to provide a dignified life to its citizens by addressing their financial needs. The augmentation of the pension amounts has led to an increased financial commitment from the state. The government commenced the disbursement of Rs 7,000 in pensions to eligible beneficiaries, which included an enhanced amount of Rs 1,000 each for April, May, and June, along with July’s pension of Rs 4,000. This increment has imposed an additional burden of Rs 819 crore on the state exchequer, with a cumulative impact of Rs 1,650 crore for the preceding three months. To ensure the efficient and transparent distribution of these pensions, the government deployed approximately 1.25 lakh secretariat employees. These officials were tasked with delivering the pensions directly to the beneficiaries’ doorsteps, minimizing bureaucratic delays and potential mismanagement. Chief Minister Naidu emphasized that any deviation from this protocol, such as disbursing pensions at offices instead of beneficiaries’ residences, would result in administrative action against the concerned officials. In a bid to further enhance transparency and accountability, the state government incorporated geo-tagging technology into the pension distribution process. The residences of over 63 lakh pension beneficiaries were geo-tagged, enabling real-time monitoring of the distribution. This technological intervention ensures that pensions are delivered either at the beneficiaries’ doorsteps or within a 300-meter radius of their residences, thereby curbing potential malpractices and ensuring timely assistance. The impact of the NTR Bharosa scheme is palpable in the lives of numerous beneficiaries. For instance, during a visit to Yellamanda village in the Narasaraopet rural mandal of the Palnadu district, Chief Minister Naidu interacted with a beneficiary family, personally prepared coffee for them, and engaged in discussions to understand their challenges. He directed officials to provide financial aid to the family for self-employment and housing, exemplifying the government’s holistic approach to welfare.
The NTR Bharosa pension scheme represents a pivotal step in Andhra Pradesh’s endeavor to uplift its marginalized communities. By increasing pension amounts and ensuring efficient distribution through technological means, the state government has demonstrated its commitment to social welfare and transparency. The proactive involvement of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his administration in understanding and addressing the challenges faced by beneficiaries underscores a governance model that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens. As the scheme progresses, it is anticipated that these measures will significantly alleviate financial hardships and contribute to a more equitable society in Andhra Pradesh.
